Fireplace painting.

Pudsey, Leeds.

  • This fireplace painting project was part of a larger job for one of our amazing clients in Pudsey, Leeds. It involved adding a splash of colour to a wooden fireplace that the client wanted to turn into a feature.

The client was initially unsure of exactly which colour to go for—she just knew she wanted something bold and bright that really ‘popped’. After looking through some of our colour swatches, the colour ‘Mr David’ from Little Greene was chosen.

The previous paint was in good condition, so the fireplace just needed a good sanding to key the surface. We then went straight on with two coats of Intelligent Satin, a hard-wearing, satin-finish paint. This was applied by brush, as the client wanted a traditional look to the finish.

The brightwork on this fireplace was originally chrome, which was starting to look a bit tired (forgot to take pictures of that—sorry!). We were tasked with going matt black. A light keying of the surfaces, followed by an etching primer and two coats of heat-resistant matt black paint, and we were done.

The ‘Mr David’ colour ended up looking great, and a fireplace that previously blurred into the background now takes centre stage. The client was really pleased with it, and I was impressed with how well the paint covered—the final colour certainly did pop as well!

    • Sanding - Mirka Gold Flex P180 & P240 Grit

    • Woodwork - Little Greene Intelligent Satin in Mr David Yellow

    • Chrome - Etching primer

    • Chrome - Tikkurila Muuri in Matt

    • Masking - Deltec Gold Tainter’s Tape and Masking Film

  • With it being a blustery day for the project (typical!) we ended up making a protective spray booth to paint the chrome parts in from cardboard and painter’s tape. ‘Overcome and adapt’ as someone once said……not sure who though.

  • The client was really pleased with how the fireplace turned out. She gave me the following feedback:

‘We are so impressed with how this fireplace came out Tom, thank you so much. And to think we were going to rip it out and buy a new one!’
