We recently completed this decorating project for one of our fantastic clients in Adel, Leeds. The walls had been freshly plastered, and the aim was to achieve a pristine, bright white finish on the ceiling and woodwork with the walls going a luxurious dark blue with slight green undertones.
As the walls were freshly plastered throughout we began with a light sand with fine grit using the Mirka Leros dustless wall sander. This was to remove any small nibs or imperfections on the plaster before the mist coat. Doing this also helps to prepare any areas of plaster that have been over-polished as these tend to repel paint.
After filling all the imperfections in the woodwork and masking it all off we used the airless sprayer to apply a mist coat to the walls and ceiling. Once dry the ceiling had two coats of premium ceiling paint and then we were ready to start the woodwork.
The filled areas on the woodwork were then sanded smooth, with some areas needing further repairs. Once completed the rest of the woodwork was sanded and readied for paint. We then gave the wood a single primer coat, caulked the gaps, and two top coats with the hand-held Graco QuickShot airless paint sprayer (my favourite tool!).
Once the woodwork was fully dry the following day, we masked some areas up (for an extra sharp edge) and then used a brush to cut in around the edges twice with the dark blue. We then rolled the rest. The paint went on like a dream but did end up needing three coats to fully cover.

With the room being north-facing and the clients away on holiday, it wasn’t the warmest, so some of the paint coats took longer than usual to dry. This was helped by using our trusty space heater, fan, and dehumidifier combo—which worked a treat.
The dark blue required three coats to fully cover in some areas, which can happen with really dark colours. Fortunately, we had plenty of paint, so it wasn’t an issue—just took a little more time to complete the job.

The clients were really pleased with the results we managed to achieve on this project. They sent me the following text message afterwards:
‘Tom, we've just got back and we’re absolutely buzzing about how this room is looking. You've done a top job. The colours look great too.
I also agree that the skirting looks particularly nice, and the white contrasts beautifully with the blue’
